EYP-ers of the Month: December

December is the month of parties and feasts and where better to celebrate than at an EYP Session?

Our lovely Regional Coordinators in Salzburg, Johanna Egger and Katharina Radler, are currently diligently organising the very first EYP Day in Salzburg, which will take place on the 14th of December. Thanks to them, Salzburg will get a little bit of the Austrian EYP spirit right before Christmas and so Johanna and Kathi are without a doubt our EYP-ers of the Month.

We are immensely happy to have such great and  couragous Regional Coordinators in Salzburg and are really looking forward to what’s next!

Review: EYP Day Vienna

The EYP Day Vienna (16. November 2012) gathered 38 students from Vienna and Lower Austria to experience EYP for the first time and discuss five topics. With an international chairs team and a dedicated teachers’ programme, the EYP Day turned out to be a pleasant experience for everyone.

After a brief teambuilding in the morning, the committees went straight to committee work. All students needed some time to get used to EYP state of mind and methodologies. The last doubts about the endless surprises and new things to be discovered in EYP were put to rest by an energiser-flashmob at lunch. The General Assembly (GA) was lively from beginning to end; meanwhile delegates wished they had more time to debate the resolutions.

EYP Austria is happy about the generally positive feedback and invites all delegates to apply to the upcoming National Conference (Linz 2013) – with a full day of GA.

You can find all photos of the EYP Day Vienna on Facebook.

Stay tuned for further news!

EYP-er of the Month: November

In November, we would like to honor Nina Thomic and Teresa Gisinger as our EYP-ers of the Month. Not only are they hosting EYP Austria’s first EYP Day for this term on 16 November, but they also took up the challenge of organising our annual alumni winter event – EYP on Ski – coming January.

They are a dream team indeed, and we are very happy to have such motivated and efficient members aboard of EYP Austria. Keep up the good work, ladies! We are all very excited for what is coming up.

European Youth: consensus on gay marriage

The debate over equal rights for gay marriage is a hot issue all over Europe.
Some European countries have full equal rights by now, whereas others still
grant few to no rights to homosexual couples. The current European Youth
Poll sends a clear signal: The young participants favour gay marriage by a
clear majority of 85.5%.

73.6% also want same-sex couples to have the same rights to adopt children
as other couples. The young people know, however, that their views are not
necessarily those of the majority in their societies: 80.4% believe, that there
is widespread prejudice against homosexuals in their countries. 64% even
think that open homosexuality is an obstacle to a career in their country.
The answers to this question show great differences between the
participating countries While in Turkey (95%), but also in Italy (78%) or
Austria (77%) many think that homosexuality hinders a career, only 39% do
so in the Netherlands, and only 25% in Norway.

The survey, which is regularly conducted by the European Youth Parliament
in cooperation with Stiftung Mercator drew a record number of participants
on this topic: 5624 participants, 16-27 of age, from 45 European countries
participated between September 12th – 25th.

EYP Austria would like to thank the many contributors in Austria for their time spent on the survey. Extensive material on the survey can be found on the international EYP  website eyp.org. Press releases in German language can be found in the press section.

For further requests, please contact the Austrian Coordinator for European Youth Polls, Jakob Etzel (jakob.etzel@eypaustria.org).
