Europa Club Live: “Stronger together? European Solidarity in Times of Crisis”

After the economic and financial crisis, migration movements and Brexit, the corona pandemic is the latest stress test for European solidarity. As one of the central principles on which the European Union is founded, solidarity plays a crucial role in European integration: you help the weaker and thereby become stronger together. For more solidarity in Europe, however, a European identity based on shared values, perspectives and interests is also required. A community that sees itself as a “we” and can overcome contradictions.

But how relevant is this idea in times of intra-European tensions? Where do we see European solidarity today and why is it reaching its limits elsewhere? How did the member states and the EU neighbours react to the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of European solidarity? And does it have to be redefined in connection with the debate on the future of Europe?

As a part of the 30th anniversary of the Austrian Society for European Politics (ÖGfE), these questions will be discussed tomorrow, 2 December, at 13:00–14:00 CET. The event will be live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook.
